The Icebergs

And now we see a different side of the sea, the grim side. I accidentally came across this exuberant romantic painting by the to me unknown American artist Frederick Edwin Church (1826-1900). The first impression of stunning natural beauty quickly makes way once the realization kicks in that any survivors of the ship wrecked in a collision with these icebergs are doomed to die in the harsh freezing conditions of the (ant)arctic.
