In June 2007, the Dutch newspaper Trouw announced the result of the election by their readers of the most beautiful building in the Netherlands. With so many centuries old treasures in Amsterdam, Haarlem and Delft (to name a few), I was pleasantly surprised that a modern architecture building came out first. When the Gasunie Gebouw in Groningen, designed by the Dutch architects Alberts and van Huut in the organic architecture style, was built in the nineteen nineties, reactions were far less favourable. The building quickly became known as "The witches castle" or even worse for the people working there, "The monkey rock". Funny how quickly moods can change.
