The lion king

Appropriate for today, as it is King's Day in the Netherlands (and the lion and the colour orange are Dutch symbols as well). There are better known posters for this animated movie, but I love this one for its minimalism.

The best Dutch #1 hits: 35. Arms of Mary (Sutherland Brothers & Quiver)

As posted here, the Dutch top40 chart celebrated its 50th birthday in January this year. When I posted about that event, I included my top50 songs that made the top40 chart in the past. I was intrigued how few of my favourite songs actually made the #1 position, so the rest of the year I will be posting at a rate of one a week (on Saturday, the day the top40 was broadcast) my countdown of fifty favourite #1 hits. At #35, we find Arms of Mary by the British folk rock band Sutherland Brothers & Quiver (#1 in 1976). The main claim to fame for the Sutherland Brothers had been that they had penned the Rod Stewart million seller Sailing. Then came the summer of 1976 and Arms of Mary, taken from the album Reach for the sky, suddenly raced up the charts in Europe. Art Rock score: 9/10 (awesome song, one of the 1000 best of all time).

Schoolyard ghosts

No-Man is one of many side-projects by Steven Wilson, the singer and leader of Porcupine Tree. In No-Man, he partners up with Tim Bowness, who takes the lead singer role on the variety of beautiful pop/rock songs that they have turned out over the years (between 1994 and 2012). Schoolyard ghosts from 2008 may well be their best album, and it surely comes with one of the best covers.

Concentric

I have been absent on Flickr for a while for various reasons. It was a pleasant surprise that one of the first photographs I posted after I returned to the site last week ended up in Flickr Explore, my 75th to do so (as well as hitting my top10 most faved shots). It is the ceiling of the Eusebius Church in Arnhem, which sports interesting modern lights.

Awakenings

After some thoughts on the subject, I have decided to continue the Flickr Favourites theme in the blog. Here we have a beautiful image of dawn breaking over Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.
East Java, Indonesia. It was shot by my Flickr friend cormend. I love how this reminds me of oriental paintings. As usual, all rights retained by the creator.

The best Dutch #1 hits: 36. Yesterday (Beatles)

At #36, we find Yesterday by the Beatles  (#1 in 1965), the most covered song of the twentieth century bar none. Hardly any song has suffered so much from over-exposure, and it makes it easy to forget how experimental this song was for its time. Sure, a nice ballad, been there done that, but producer George Martin deserves all the credit for realizing that the song cried out for a totally different instrumentation than the standard Beatles guitar-driven combo. It was still a big leap from there to the wonderful and brilliant choice of a string quartet! Art Rock score: 9/10 (awesome song, one of the 1000 best of all time).

Sloten

Once more one of my attempts at digital art based on my own photographs, created with the free software SuperPhoto that came with my laptop. This is a photograph I took almost two years ago of the small Frisian city of Sloten, given a painting-like effect by the programme. The link leads to the original photograph.

All of Bach

The web site All of Bach is an ongoing effort that is truly stunning in its scope. Every Friday they intend to post a new recording of one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s 1080 works, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society and many guest musicians. An unbelievable treasure trove is being built up this way.

The best Dutch #1 hits: 37. Xanadu (ELO and Olivia Newton John)

At #37, we find an unlikely cooperation between Olivia Newton-John and the Electric Light orchestra (#1 in 1980). It is completely over the top, including the clip, and yet I love it. Art Rock score: 9/10 (awesome song, one of the 1000 best of all time).

Dangast landscape

High time to feature expressionist grandmaster Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976) once more in the blog. This beauty was created in 1910. More on Schmidt-Rottluff in the wikipedia article linked to below.

Birdman

Neo Art Deco movie posters are getting more and more popular. After the beautiful set created in 2010 for Black swan, a similar promotion was followed for the 2014 movie Birdman (see for other examples here), They were designed by Fox Searchlight.

Haunted forest

A few months ago, I was browsing my first Flickr uploads (8 years ago). One caught my eye, and with the advantage of additional experience, I flipped it upside down and cropped it a bit to get the above image, which I like very much, and got a lot of positive feedback.

Iceblink luck

The unique art rock sound of Scottish band Cocteau Twins more often than not came with beautiful covers as well. An example is this cover of their 1990 single Iceblink luck. More about Cocteau Twins on the linked Wikipedia page.

Sion Abbey

Once more one of my attempts at digital art based on my own photographs, created with the free software SuperPhoto that came with my laptop. This is a photograph I took two years ago of the Sion Abbey near Deventer, given a painting-like effect by the programme. The link leads to the original photograph.
