A star shell

There are many paintings that have been inspired by the Great War, but for consistent quality, one can always fall back on Christopher Nevinson (1888-1946). This chilling vision depicts the trenches lit up by an exploding shell. It dates back to 1916, shortly after he was invalided out of the Royal Army Medical Corps.
