Finally this animated video of A routine day, one of my favourites of the seventies, has been put on YouTube in good quality. The Canadian band Klaatu is probably best remembered for their anthem Calling occupants of interplanetary craft, but the real gem in their repertoire is this little known track from their third album Sir Army Suit. The initial rumours that they were the Beatles had finally turned out to be just rumours, and the band struggled for recognition - which they never received. A routine day is an homage to sixties' pop music, but the lyrics are biting in their directness. Never has a dreary unexciting life been described so sharply in pop music: "the life I live would even make a dead man yawn...".
Art Rock score: 10/10 (brilliant masterpiece, one of 200 best songs of all time)
