The Sounds of Silence (John Cage and 4'33")

It is probably the most discussed and most controversial piece of classical music (if it is indeed music): John Cage's 4'33" from 1952, which requires the performer(s) not to play their instrument(s) at all, for a period of 4 minutes and 33 seconds. Discussions about the piece are usually very heated, with loads of misinformation flying around. I am glad that I came across the linked article by Larry J Solomon, which gives a clear and concise overview of its history and purpose. So... is it music? I think I'd better keep silent about that.
