Can one sell a painting the artist wanted destroyed?

An interesting art-icle about the planned sale of a Francis Bacon painting by the Brooklyn Museum. Interesting, because the artist had explicitly stated that he did not want this work to be exhibited, and preferred it to be destroyed. So, should the wish of the artist be respected, or can the museum cash in for an estimated 7 million dollars? Read the whole story in the link.
