Bye bye 2016

As 2016 is finally drawing to a close, the song line "things can only get better" (generally, not personally) comes to mind. Image sourced from here.

You have been loved (RIP George Michael)

This year, the Grim Reaper has been a real pain the ass for music lovers. Last Christmas he took George Michael from us, aged only 53. In his memory, the gorgeous ballad You have been loved. Art Rock score: 10/10 (brilliant song, one of the 200 best of all time).

Rodney Smith

Earlier this month, American photographer Rodney Smith (1947-2016) passed away. He was best known for his portraits and fashion photography, his work having been published in e.g. Time and Wall Street Journal. His minimal, and often quirky, style is well illustrated by the example in this post. More about Smith in the linked Wikipedia site.

Pictorial Review December 1929

A suitable vintage magazine cover for Christmas day. Love the typical flapper hat!

Best wishes once more

And another way to convey our best wishes. This digital greeting card is my wife's design, based on a recent painting of hers, made especially for use in the social media.

The Art of Lu Schaper

Merry Christmas everybody!

Our Christmas card this year shows the Christmas tree in our gallery. Note the decoration by my wife, highly original and including some of her art work. Merry Christmas everybody!

The neon demon

The movie itself got mixed reviews, but the poster for this 2016 Refn thriller is undoubtedly one of the best of the year. Sheer class.

A very atypical shot in my portfolio, but it got so many positive reactions on Flickr that I had to include it in the blog.

Repost: Vogue's Winter perfume

A re-post from the artchives (original posting date 21 December 2011) - with the blog in its current form over eight years old, I intend to dig up some of the older posts once in a while. I selected this one because of the time of the year.

Another suitable subject for today's start of winter: a wonderful vintage art deco German poster for Vogue's Winter perfume. The design is by Jupp Wiertz, dating back to 1927.

Here is a painting by Italian grandmaster Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) that I had not seen before, and that I love. It was created in 1916, exactly a century ago. More about Modigliani in the linked Wikipedia article.

Now that I revived the Flickr Favourites subject earlier this month, let's continue. Here we have a beautiful masterpiece by my Flickr friend Aftab Uzzaman. He has featured many times before in this blog, and I love this study of wine glasses, perfection in black and white. As usual, all rights retained by the creator.

Potpourri: Out of the box

From time to time I will be highlighting some of my own favourite posts in my parallel blog, Art's Potpourri. These can be recent or from some time ago. This one was originally posted 12 September 2013.

Picasso’s self-portraits from age 15 to 90

The linked art-icle gives an interesting overview of the development of the art of Pablo Picasso as reflected in his self-portraits. In total it includes 14 "selfies" from age 15 to 90.

Love song

I selected this because it reminds me of the Plastic People shots in Art's Potpourri. It is of course a group of lifesize humans, sculpting a snow creation for the 29th Harbin Snow Sculpture Art Expo in China. As always, all rights retained by the photographer (Wang Jianwei/Photoshot Avalon).

Day breaks

Day breaks is the latest Norah Jones album, released a few weeks ago. It is of course easy to make a pleasing album cover for a beautiful singer, but this one is really special in its vintage feeling. Unfortunately, neither AllMusic nor Wikipedia give any information about the designer.

A foggy day in Kampen

With this picture I returned to Flickr after two months' absence. I shot this foggy morning scene one minute from our home - it is the old city hall, now used as museum. Not a personal favourite, but given the many positive reactions it received, I decided to include it here.

Camera: Canon IXUS 170, 20 Megapixels, handheld
Exposure: 0.06 sec (1/160)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 6.9 mm
ISO Speed: 160
Post-processing: Picasa 3.0

One of my favourite categories in my parallel blog Art's Potpourri is Plastic People - shots with little plastic figurines interacting with life-size objects. A recent advertising campaign for Goodwill uses this idea very well, visualizing their motto "Donate stuff, create jobs". More examples in the link. The advertising agency is VML, New York, USA.

Abstract 858-3

It's been a while since I last posted a painting by the greatest living artist, Gerhard Richter. Here is another one of his mesmerizing abstracts, this one dating from 1999. More about Richter in the linked Wikipedia article.

Autumn leaves under cracked ice

It's been over a year since I posted one of my Flickr favourites, but this one I saw yesterday is so beautiful that I had to revive the subject. My Flickr friend Peggy Reimchen (peggyhr) shot this masterpiece of autumn leaves trapped under a layer of ice. As usual, all rights retained by the creator.

French Flapper

This is a hand painted French postcard from the twenties. Cute girl, and I just love that hat!

Another beautiful piece of Photoshop from the DesignCrowd site (formerly Worth1000). This entry for the Cryptozoology contest was created by their member Katherine Gray Graphic Designer, merging pictures of a humpback whale and a hippopotamus. As always, all rights retained by the creator.

Vogue March 1927

Even after having run this blog for so many years, I still find Art Deco Vogue covers that I've not seen before. Unfortunately, no information about the designer.
