Bonniers (January 1929)

Bonniers Veckotidning (Bonniers Weekly) was (is?) a Swedish magazine, but unfortunately I cannot find much information about it on the internet. Great Art Deco covers though, like the one above, created by Georg Klinghammer.

Judge (October 1926)

The magazine Judge is well known for its stunning covers, but this colourful Art Deco extravaganza is one of the best. It's based on work by Holmgren.

Vogue (March 1932)

One could argue that the best vintage Vogue covers were in the twenties, but this one from 1932 is right up there with my other favorites. No wonder, as it was designed by the famous Georges Lepape.

A magazine one does not encounter frequently on the internet: Social from Cuba (long before communism took over). I could not find more information, but this cover is gorgeous.

Motor Magazine (May 1923)

Motor is an American motorists magazine. It was founded in 1903 by William Randolph Hearst, and published by Hearst Corp. It is still in existence, but went for digital only in 2021 (information from Wikipedia). This is one of a series of 1921/1923 covers by Howard Chandler Christy. Everything works here: the girl's face, the setting, and the contrast between the red and the bluish pastel colours.

The New Yorker (October 1926)

I wanted to select a vintage magazine cover with a chocolate theme, because our gallery is hosting a ChocolArt exhibition these weeks. Rather surprisingly, I could not find one. So I switched to the artist side of the exhibition. Since I'm married to an artist, depiction of a painter and his/her model have a special attraction to me. This cover was done by Constantin Alajalov, a regular contributor to the magazine.

Theatre Magazine (March 1924)

Theatre Magazine started in 1900 as The Theatre. Its main subject was the theater in New York. The title officially changed to Theatre Magazine in 1917, which was published until 1931. This is an outstanding cover, based on an illustration by Charles Baskerville.

Photoplay (January 1927)

Photoplay was one of the first American film fan magazines. It was founded in 1911 in Chicago and reached its peak in the 1920s and 1930s. At that time it was considered quite influential within the motion picture industry. The magazine was renowned for its artwork portraits of film stars on the cover by such artists as Earl Christy and Charles Sheldon. With the advancement of color photography, the magazine began using photographs of the stars instead by 1937. The magazine ceased publication in 1980 (from Wikipedia). This cover features movie star Olive Borden, whose career plummeted a few years later due to a reputation for being difficult and her problems to adjust to the new sound films. But she does look lovely behind the wheel of her car. The illustrator is Carl van Buskirk.

La Vie Parisienne (October 1922)

The vintage covers of this French magazine are usually attractive, the main problem is finding the ones that are not too saucy.... Well, no-one can complain that this flapper girl in front of her car is too scantily dressed.... The illustration is by René Vincent.
