Weimar chic

Some time ago I came across this beautiful fashion illustration at an Art Deco blog. There was no information provided, but I managed to find out that this illustration is for publications on Jews' fashion in the Germany of the twenties. It was created by Annie Offterdinger (1894 - ?), and although undated, it is quite in line style-wise with her dated works from around 1920.

San Yan and the Black Tiger

 

This is a book cover from our own collection - we bought it at a second hand market a few years ago. I could not find any relevant information on either the book or the author, but I love the Art Deco style cover.

Rhapsody in red

 

It's a nice picture of a girl in an orchard in full bloom, and the red parasol really stands out. Still, what's so special about it, why did I want to include it in the blog? Well, it was taken in 1907 by Louis Lumière, and it is one of the very first colour photographs made with a commercial camera (link).

Kampen, our home town since 2012, an old photograph of the Oudestraat and the old city hall. Probably taken around 1900. In the left bottom corner, behind the first carriage, the building where now our art gallery is located (ground floor, new front).

From Greece with love

 

Taken from a series of patriotic postcards by Nanni, created over a century ago, depicting various Great War allies (in this case, Greece). Little more than a sketch, but quite effective. And beautiful.

Chocolurtle

The last of the series of chocolate inspired posts. Turtles and tortoises are considered symbols of good luck in Asian cultures (personally, I have evidence that this is right), so I asked AI to make an image of a chocolate turtle. Excellent result, printed it on canvas, and show it during the exhibition - for luck. Afterwards it will get a nice spot in my man cave.

Shot by a Baron

A few years ago, I came across this image in the Flapper Girl blog, and it was love at first sight. I expected this to be a drawing or painting used as an illustration for a twenties' fashion magazine, and I was almost right. It was indeed published in the Harper's Bazaar magazine of November 1929, but it turned out to be a photograph, shot by celebrities photographer Baron Adolph de Meyer (1868 - 1946). I could not find information on the model.

A beautiful jazz age song sheet cover from the twenties by an unknown illustrator. The German title translates as "what is such a small baby doing every night at the bar?". Cheers!

At the Exhibition

 

An illustration for a fashion magazine that could have been a great painting. It was created in 1919 by George Paul Gaston Leonnec (French illustrator, 1881-1940).

The Shanghairen

 

 

The Shanghairen is a magazine that does not exist. Wait, what? From their website (link): "The Shanghairen is a collaborative project gathering dozens of emerging and confirmed talents from Shanghai and the rest of the World. It's a tribute to the famous covers of "The New Yorker", "The Parisianer", "The Tokyoiter" and "Le Montrealer". All artists were given full freedom of style and topics to express their vision of the city."  

Copyright statement: although not mentioned on the linked site, one assumes that each creator has copyright on their creation. Linking to the site where all of these can be found and displaying them in relatively low quality is deemed to fall under fair use.

Covers of sheet music from the twenties are often great pieces of art, but this stylish one from 1921 by Art Phillips may be the most beautiful I've seen so far. And if you wonder what the song sounds like, I found it on YouTube here.

Blue Angel

 

 

Under Anything Goes I will be sharing anything I think worthwhile that does not fall under one of the other categories. Examples are book covers, song sheets, and like today vintage fasion illustrations. This is a particularly brilliant one, that is claimed to be from the Purple Parrot magazine (one of the 1933 issues). I could not find any further information.
