The devil wears Prada

David Frankel's 2006 movie The devil wears Prada is very good, and the poster is even better. A stylish design, forsaking the stars' faces for an image that may well become an icon.

Not Quite Decent

  

Going back about a century, when this Irving Cummings movie hit the theaters, accompanied by a beautiful jazz age poster. The movie itself is largely forgotten nowadays (it has zero reviews on IMDB), but the poster still appears in Art Deco sites on the web.

An early Art Deco masterpiece, this Danish version of the movie poster for the 1925 Robert Vignola movie starring Eleanor Boardman and Matt Moore. The poster was designed by Sven Brasch.

Sometimes a still from the movie is the best choice for the movie poster. A case of point is this poster for the 2016 Ozon war drama. Simply beautiful.

A stunning poster for this 2011 movie directed by Michel Hazanavicius, dealing with the advent of talking pictures in Hollywood in 1929. Simple and effective and a great example of chiaroscuro.

A Good Woman

 

The 2004 Mike Barker movie A Good Woman came with a number of different official posters. I like this retro art deco one, very fitting for a movie set in 1930.

Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari by Robert Wiene is one of the early film classics. The original German version from 1919 came with a fascinating poster, clearly influenced by expressionist artists.

Hallelujah!

 

Hallelujah, the year is coming to an end. This seemed a suitably festive poster for the occasion - a beautiful jazz age poster for the 1929 movie directed by King Vidor.

The Dark Knight (2008)

Christopher Nolan's 2008 Batman flick, starring Christian Bale, Heather Ledger and Gary Oldman, is far better than anything I've seen in the genre - Heather Ledger was absolutely superb as the Joker. There were several posters for the movie, but this one stands out for me, especially how the bat symbol doubles up as the Joker's make-up/blood smeared mouth.

Memoirs of a geisha (2005)

 

This 2005 Rob Marshall American epic period drama film about a young girl being forced to become a geisha is one of the most intriguing ones I've seen - only the ending was 'too Hollywood' for my taste. It starred Zhang Ziyi, Ken Watanabe, and Michelle Yeoh.The poster is very attractive as well - it reminds me a bit of the art by Partick Nagel.

När Sjömän Gå I Land (When Sailors Go Ashore) is the Swedish title for the American 1930 movie Dames Ahoy, directed by William James Craft, starring Glenn Tryon, Helen Wright and Otis Harlan. At that time, separate movie posters were designed and printed for the Swedish market, many of them very attractive, like this one.

Almost Famous

 

Almost Famous is a 2000 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Cameron Crowe and starring Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand, and Kate Hudson. I really enjoyed watching this movie about a fictional rock band in the early seventies - not least because it was that decade that really sparked my interest in rock. Brilliant idea to put the title in Penny Lane's sunglasses on the poster.
