Windmill in Ice

This freeze frame from 2009 is one of my most popular shots from the years I spent on Flickr, and a personal favourite as well. This is the windmill in Rijssen (the same spot where our wedding shoot was done in 2000), reflected in ice and flipped upside down.

Organ sonata in the modern style

Over the years, we visited the organ museum in nearby Elburg a couple of times. A lovely experience, and I was particularly impressed by this colourful modern organ. With these lines and colours, the shot becomes quite abstract.

Xinhua Bookstore

This is without a doubt the most beautiful bookstore I've ever visited: the Xinhua shop in the Aegean Place mall in Shanghai's Minhang district. The design is by famous Japanese architect Tadao Ando. What made it extra attractive from a photographer's point of view is that large parts were not used yet, making for stunning abstract shot opportunities. I've flipped this one upside down for an even more interesting effect. One of my favourite shots of that year (2018). A square version is on display on our gallery.

Firefall

Here we have one of my favourite shots. This abstract image shows the top of a large ceramic sculpture that I spotted in the Leeuwarden Ceramics Museum Princessehof in 2018. It looks like a lava lake cascading over the rim - hence the title. I also used this image for my most recent set of name cards.

Jailhouse Rock

One of the highlights of a trip to Leeuwarden a few years ago was our first visit to the old prison, which is now used as hotel and office space, while preserving many of the aspects of its original purpose. I like the line play here, giving the image an abstract quality.

Dragon's Nest

Let's see how long I can continue the current chocolate theme - all because we're having a ChocolArt exhibition in our gallery. This is actually my own contribution to the exhibition, a picture I took years ago.

Where Red Meets Blue

A "found abstract": the concrete foot of a temporary gate opposite our home had an interesting colours pattern. It reminds me a bit if a map as well.

Klimtesque

I came across this beauty in a side street in Prague way back in 2009. Just a stone wall, where time left its mark in beautiful shapes and colours (which I pushed in post-processing in Picasa). The result is an abstract that reminds me of Klimt in its colour settings.

Surreal Stairs

A dazzling Escheresque abstract image that I encountered in the Aegean shopping mall in Shanghai during our 2018 trip, a combination of reflections and refractions on a decoration piece. One of a series of abstracts I shot in Shanghai's many modern shopping malls.

Nanjing Usnisa palace

An example of architecture abstractions in photography. About halfway our 2018 Shanghai trip, we took a short organized three day excursion to Nanjing, Yangzhou and Zhenjiang. The first stop was at the Nanjing Usnisa Palace, a formidable complex that houses relics of the Buddha Siddhartha Gautama. The architecture is incredible, and the visit was unforgettable.  Here we have a detail of the roof of the entrance building - a stunning abstraction full of twists and turns.

Shard

I've shot many rust abstracts over the years, but this is one of the most remarkable. There is actually a 3D structure formed by the rust here. A photograph I took a few months ago with my Canon Ixus 170.

Primeval

I am a keen amateur photographer, even though the Covid era lessened my interest in this hobby considerably. Recently I picked it up again, mostly aiming for abstract images such as this one. It is a detail of a large metal art work on display in the Sneek city museum. The camera used was a simple point and shooter (Canon IXUS 170).
