The Chicagoan was an American magazine modeled after The New Yorker published from June 1926 until April 1935. Focusing on the cultural life of the city of Chicago, each issue of The Chicagoan contained art, music, and drama reviews, profiles of personalities and institutions, commentaries on the local scene, and editorials, along with cartoons and original art. I have not been able to credit the illustrators responsible for these covers, but Wikipedia list the following names: E. Simms Campbell, Albert Carreno, Nat Karson, A. Raymond Katz, Isadore Klein, and Boris Riedel. The image above was made at the Photofunia site, which has no copyright issues.
June 1927
Chicago being on the shore of Lake Michigan, it stands to reason that sailing would have been a popular pastime. This cover captures the fun of it very well.
August 1927
Anyone for tennis? Interesting that in those days there were still roads where one could do this apparently, net and all.
October 1927
I visited Chicago about sixty years later, and had to see this fountain - made famous by the TV series Married With Children....
A cover that reminds us that Chicago acquired the nickname "The Windy City" for a reason. even the traffic light is bending over.
April 1928
A cover that looks a bit more subdued on one hand, and yet screams "Art Deco" and "Flapper Girl" on the other hand.
Not my first association with Chicago, but of course there are beaches for recreation on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Christmas gifts being carried home by the chauffeur? Nice Art Deco hat on the Lady of the house.
March 1930
Probably a (former) Chicago landmark, which I can't identify. I find this cover intriguing in its darkness.
October 1930
Hmmm. Copy/paste did not exist at the time, so I'm a bit puzzled why every top hat is exactly the same. It does make for a compelling image though.
January 1931
Kicking in the new year skating outside. The figures are remarkably stylized - somehow more like a fifties' cover in my opinion.
March 1931
Chicago or Paris? And the couple look strangely intoxicated - while the Nationwide Prohibition was still ongoing.
June 1931
Closing with a horse race image that is very well composed making good use of the diagonal.
