Vintage Shoes Posters

Vintage advertisement posters are much sought after, and have been recognized for their artistic merit as well giving us a chance to look at days gone by. There have even been dedicated exhibitions of such posters in art museums. I like these nostalgic images and will post a few grouped per theme. Today's theme is shoes. The image above is created via Photofunia and is free from copyright issues.

Doelker (1923)

A beautiful poster promoting Charles Doelker, a Zurich-based shoe store specializing in luxury footwear. The design is by Otto Baumberger.

Bally Sport Shoes (1924)

Bally is a famous Swiss brand, with its headquarters, teams and part of its production located in Ticino. This poster was created by Studio Grafiikka.

Tana (1925)

A shoe cream advertisement. Two interesting observations I made in preparing today's blog post: [1] there are far less vintage posters for shoe cream than for shoes, and [2] most shoe cream posters include a coloured model, sometimes in a way that is borderline racist (or beyond). This one is fine though. It was designed byLeonetto Cappiello.

Panther (1926)

I could find no information about this brand. The design is credited to famous German poster artist Ludwig Hohlwein, so the Panther brand might be from the same country.

Palma (1928)

Palma was presumably an Italian brand, but this Art Deco jewel is a poster from Hungary (kaucsuk sarok means rubber heels). The designer is Róbert Berény, a Hungarian painter, one of the avant-garde group known as The Eight who introduced cubism and expressionism to Hungarian art.

Candee Snow Boots (1929)

Candee was a Shoes company named after American pioneer rubber manufacturer Leverette Candee. The design of this  poster for the German market is by Franco Barberis.

La Ligne Aurore (1930)

It is surprisingly difficult to find any information for this (supposedly French) shoes company. Never mind, it is a beautiful Art deco poster by Jean Chassaing.

Walder (1930)

Walder is a Swiss company founded in 1874, and still in business. This poster is intriguing because the cute dog gets ten times more space than the product that is for sale.

Henke (1930s?)

Henke was a Swiss shoes company, best remembered for their boots and ski boots, their specialties in the sixties. This is a much earlier poster advertising regular men's shoes.

Gazelle (1935)

In The Netherlands we know Gazelle as a bicycle brand, but apparently the name was also used for a shoes manufacture. I like the quirky design of ths poster, credited to Robys (Robert Wolff).

Strub (1930s?)

Strub was a Swiss shoes manufacturer. This poster emphasizes the elegance of their models. And their shoes.

de Nero Bentalls (1949)

As the poster says "Featherlght and Flexible". I could not find information about the brand or the designer, but apparently this was originally an advertisement in a 1949 Vogue issue.
