Vintage advertisement posters are much sought after, and have been recognized for their artistic merit as well giving us a chance to look at days gone by. There have even been dedicated exhibitions of such posters in art museums. I like these nostalgic images and will post a few grouped per theme. Today's theme is "winter". The image above is created via Photofunia and is free from copyright issues.
Bovril (around 1920)
Bovril (around 1920)
Kicking off with two posters for the same product. Bovril is the trademarked name of a thick and salty meat extract paste similar to a yeast extract, and at the time recommended to get more resistance against colds. I could not retrieve information about the designers, or even the year - I guess it is around 1920.
Hälsingland (around 1920)
Hälsingland, sometimes referred to as Helsingia in English, is a province in central Sweden. This poster stands out for me for the visual play: the skis making the letter H. No information about the designer or the time frame - I guess around 1920, but I could be way off.
Font-Romeu (1923)
A poster advertising both the winter sports town of Font-Romeu in the French Pyrenees, as the way to get there by the Chemins de Fer du Midi (a French railway company. The poster was designed by Tony George Roux.
This is the poster for the very first Olympic Wintergames in Chamonix, at the foot of the Mont Blanc. It was designed by famous poster artist Auguste Matisse - an interesting choice with the eagle dominating the sportsmen.
Hotel Waldhaus Sils (1924)
Figure skating in such an environment in Swizerland - how romantic does it get? I could not find information about the designer.
Nooitgedagt Skates (1925)
The national winter sport in the Netherlands is ice skating. This advertisement is for a famous skates manufacturer in IJlst (Friesland). It was designed by Harm Visser.
Vogue Winter Perfume (1927)
And now for something completely different: a wonderful vintage art deco German poster for Vogue's Winter perfume. The design is by Jupp Wiertz.
Winter in Monte Carlo (around 1930)
Now this is the way to spend winter - after all, the elegant people are doing it according to this beautiful Art Deco poster. No information about the designer or the date - based on the style I'd guess around 1930.
The New Haven Rail Road (1939)
Now that's a poster that makes a direct impact due to the point of view. It is an advertisement for the New Haven Rail Road company, who serviced the local ski resorts. The design is by Sascha Maurer.
I like this one for its originality - advertising the winter sport region of Allgäu (a region in Swabia in southern Germany, covering the south of Bavarian Swabia, southeastern Baden-Württemberg and parts of Austria) not with prominent images of skiers but with a deer. The art work is by painter and graphic designer Franz Weiss.
The Adirondack Mountains form a massif in northeastern Upstate New York. It is another poster that I like for its originality. The image of the skis planted in the snow is a real eye catcher. No information about the designer, or the time - but I would guess around 1960.
