Motor Magazine Covers

Motor is an American motorists magazine. It was founded in 1903 by William Randolph Hearst, and published by Hearst Corp. It is still in existence, but went for digital only in 2021 (information from Wikipedia). The image above was made at the Photofunia site, which has no copyright issues.

March 1918

Given the time, and the uniform, I'm thinking this could be an army car she's stepping out off. On the other hand, it might be something like a mail van. I've seen this cover ascribed to an illustrator named "z.p. nikoliki", but that does not seem to match the signature.

December 1920

A very stylish image for the holidays month - and one of the few where one has to look twice before actually spotting the car. If I decipher the signature right, the illustrator is the famous Ruth Eastman.

February 1921

A wonderful winter image - loving the hat! This one is without a doubt illustrated  by Ruth Eastman.

March 1921

A summer-themed cover for a spring tie issue, once more by Ruth Eastman. The combination of the car with a girl in bathing suit is a bit weird, but of course sex sells.

July 1921

A more modestly clad girl on the cover of the July issue, again illustrated by Ruth Eastman. Anyone for tennis?

 October 1921

Stylish, autumnal, and simply beautiful. This is the last one in today's post that was illustrated by Ruth Eastman.

November 1921

What a difference one month makes. Exuberant, almost over the top, and still very effective. One of the first (possibly the first) covers for Motor by famous artist Howard Chandler Christy.

December 1921

Next month, same illustrator, similar style. By now, the cover girl is definitely becoming more important than the car (or in this case the bus).

 May 1923

This for me is the best in the series of 1921/1923 covers by Howard Chandler Christy. Everything works here: the girl's face, the setting, and the contrast between the red and the bluish pastel colours.

February 1924

Believe it or not: the remaining three covers are also by Howard Chandler Christy. But what a change in style! It is like the older HCC cover style and the Ruth Eastman style got mixed.

March 1924

Sports, girls and cars are an alluring combination. We already has tennis and ice skating and this one I presume is golf.

April 1924

Saving one of the best for last: the clever use of a few spots of red really make this illustration (I have been using the same technique in some of my photographs).
