It stands to reason that the best illustrations created for the fashion magazines of the first decades of the twentieth century ended up on the covers. However, there are plenty of gems one can find outside the covers as well. Here we have a dozen beauties. The image above was made with Photofunia - no copyright issues.
This magazine illustration from 1910 is a beautiful piece of Art
Nouveau. It was created by Charles Rebel Stanton (1890 - 1954), whose
work appeared in many magazines and posters.
Every time I encounter an image like this, I am struck how beautiful and
artistic the illustrations for fashion magazines were a century ago.
This beauty, depicting an evening dress by Beer, dates back to 1920, and
was created by Jean-Dominique Domergue for the magazine Gazette du Bon Ton.
This illustration is for publications on Jews' fashion in the Germany of the twenties. It was created by Annie Offterdinger (1894 - ?), and although undated, it is quite in line style-wise with her dated works from around 1920.
A beautiful fashion illustration made in 1922 by Charles Gates Sheldon
for the Country Club magazine. Lovely girl (awesome hat!) with a lovely
dog; it reminds me of a cute version of the little red riding hood
fairy-tale....
A beautiful 1922 fashion illustration by
Thayaht, the pseudonym of
artist and designer Ernesto Michahelles (1893–1959. The cape design is
by Madeleine Vionnet.
Autumn Leaves
One good Thayaht deserves another. Here he is once more. This autumnal
creation dates back to 1923.
Another exquisite fashion magazine illustration from the twenties. This
one is by one of the masters of the genre, George Barbier (1882–1932).
This beautiful fashion illustration was created for
a 1927 magazine by Leon Benigni (1892-1948). A gorgeous piece of Art
Deco.
This fashion illustration is probably from the
twenties or early thirties, and was created by Italian illustrator Ezio
Anichini (1886 - 1948).
This may be 'just' a fashion magazine illustration of around 1930, but
it is seriously beautiful. It was created by James Vaughan.
As summer approaches, this seemed appropriate. A beautiful magazine
illustration from around 1930 by George Barbier (1882-1932).
Blue Angel
A brilliant fashion illustration, that is claimed to be from the Purple Parrot magazine (one of the 1933 issues). I could not find any further information.
