Motion Picture Classic Magazine Covers

Motion Picture Classic was an American monthly fan magazine that was published from 1915 to 1931. Their covers form the twenties were very attractive, mostly featuring famous actresses presented in drawings rather than photographs. The image above was made at the Photofunia site, which has no copyright issues.

January 1920

Here is an early issue, featuring a drawing of movie star Marion Davies, perhaps best remembered as newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst' mistress.

November 1920

This cover features Louise Glaum, who became famous by playing vamps better than any of her colelagues.

 September 1921

This cover featuring Corinne Griffith is simply stunning - museum quality. Cover art by Benjamin Eggleston.

August 1923

This cover features the lovely Bebe Daniels in cover art by Hal Phyfe.

April 1925

It took some deciphering, but I got there: this is Louise Fazenda, one of the stars of the silent films period.

February 1926

One of the most original magazine covers from the golden twenties. This one once more depicts the beautiful Marion Davies, the mistress of William Randolph Hearst. I'd love to get that hat for my wife!

October 1926

If you have followed my blog for many years, you will have noticed that I can not get enough of Louise Brooks. I was delighted to see that she had also featured on one of the covers of this magazine.

January 1927

Olive Borden graces this cover. According to Wikipedia, she was nicknamed "the Joy Girl", after playing the lead in the 1927 film of that same title. Borden was known for her jet-black hair and stunning overall beauty. Spot on.

June 1927

Clara Bow is another prime candidate for the title "one of the faces of the jazz age". Perhas a tad too stylized in this drawing, but still lovely.

September 1927

Here we have the gorgeous Sally O'Neil, one of the forgotten stars of the twenties. She appeared in more than 40 films, often with her name above the title.

September 1928

Another wonderful nostalgic cover from this magazine, this one featuring the beautiful actress Sue Carol. I had never heard of her, but she is a real looker.

November 1928

The charming Canadian actress Marie Prevost features on this cover in a Don Reed drawing. Her tale is a tragic one - after years of drinking, Prevost died of acute alcoholism at the age of 38, almost broke, in 1937.
